What is it used for?

DESLORATADINE is an antihistamine. It helps to relieve the symptoms of hay fever (sneezing, runny nose, and itchy, watery eyes), and may help to treat hives and associated skin itch.

What should I discuss with my physician prior to taking this medicine?

Please do tell your physician if you have any of the following conditions:

  • asthma
  • kidney disease
  • liver disease or hepatitis
  • an unusual reaction to desloratadine, medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • breast-feeding

How this medicine should be used?

Desloratadine tablets should be taken orally either with or without food. Leave the disintegrating tablet in the blister package until you are ready to take it. Peel the blister pack open with dry hands and put the tablet on your tongue. The tablet will then dissolve rapidly until it is ready to be swallowed. It is not necessary to drink any water with this medicine, you may, however, drink liquid after taking the dose. Your doses should be taken at the regular intervals. You should never take this medicine more often than prescribed.

Inquire with your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine by children. Special care might be necessary.

Overdosage: If you suspect an overdosage, get in touch with the nearest poison control center or emergency room immediately.

NOTE: This medicine is only intended for your use. You should never share it with the others.

What to do if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can, then go back to your regular dosing schedule on the the next day. You should never take double or extra doses; a single doze is sufficient for the purposes.

What are the possible interactions with the other medicine/food/etc?

  • erythromycin
  • ketoconazole

In addition, the following medicines can make you feel drowsy:

  • alcohol
  • barbiturate medicines for inducing sleep or treating seizures (convulsions)
  • medicines for anxiety or sleeping problems, such as alprazolam, diazepam or temazepam
  • medicines for hay fever and other allergies
  • medicines for mental depression
  • medicines for mental problems and psychotic disturbances
  • medicines for pain

Provide your physician with a list of all the medicine, including herbs and non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements that you are using. Do let them know if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use any of the illegal drugs or drinks with caffeine or alcohol. Some of those items may also interact with your medicine, causing undesired consequenses. Please always consult with your health care professional prior to stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What should I watch for while taking this medicine?

Visit your prescriber or health care professional for checks on your progress. Let your prescriber or health care professional know if there is no improvement to your symptoms after several days of treatment.

You shouldn’t drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires mental alertness until you know how desloratadine affects you. To reduce the risk of dizzy or fainting spells, Do not stand up or sit up quickly, especially if you are a senior patient. Alcohol may increase dizziness and drowsiness. Refrain from using alcohol at all costs.

Your might experience dry mouth symptom. If you do, chew sugarless gum or suck a sugar candy. Drinking plenty of water will also help overcome it.

Does this medicine have any possible side effects?

The following side effects should be reported to your doctor or health care professional as soon as they are noticed:

  • fever
  • seizures
  • yellowing of skin or eyes

The side effects listed below usually do not necessarily require any medical attention (please do report them to your physician if they are recurrent or bothersome):

  • dizziness
  • drowsiness or tiredness
  • dry mouth
  • muscle aches
  • sore or dry throat

Where should I store it?

Keep out of the children’s reach in a container that cat not be opened by them.

Store at the room temperature 15-30 degrees C (59-86 degrees F). Avoid excessive heat. Dispose of any unused medicine after the expiry date is reached.
