What is ths medicine?

DOXYCYCLINE is a tetracycline antibiotic. It helps to kill certain bacteria or stop their growth. It is used for the treatment of many kinds of infections, like dental, skin, respiratory, and urinary tract infections. It also treats acne, Lyme disease, malaria, and certain sexually transmitted infections.

What should my health care professional know before taking this medicine?

Please do tell your physician if you have any of the following conditions:

  • liver disease
  • long exposure to sunlight like working outdoors
  • stomach problems like colitis
  • an unusual or allergic reaction to doxycycline, tetracycline antibiotics, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • breast-feeding

How is this medicine should be taken?

This medicine should be taken orally accompanied with a full glass of water. Follow the directions on the prescription label. It is best to take this medicine without food, but if it upsets your stomach, it should be taken during a meal. This medicine should be taken at the regular intervals. You should never take this medicine more often than prescribed. You should be taking all of your medicine as prescribed even if you feel better or think that you do. Doses should never be skipped; neither should you stop the treatment course prematurely.

Contact your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine by children. Special care might be necessary. While this drug may be prescribed for children as young as 8 years old for selected conditions, precautions do apply.

Overdosage: If you suspect an overdosage, get in touch with the nearest poison control center or emergency room immediately.

NOTE: This medicine is only intended for your use. You should never share it with the others.

What to do if I missed a dose?

If you missed a dose, it should be taken as soon as possible. If the time has almost come for the next dose, only that one should be taken. You should never take double or extra doses; a single doze is sufficient for the purposes.

What are the possible interactions with the other medicine/food/etc?

  • antacids
  • barbiturates
  • birth control pills
  • bismuth subsalicylate
  • carbamazepine
  • methoxyflurane
  • other antibiotics
  • phenytoin
  • vitamins that contain iron
  • warfarin

Provide your physician with a list of all the medicine, including herbs and non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements that you are using. Do let them know if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use any of the illegal drugs or drinks with caffeine or alcohol. Some of those items may also interact with your medicine, causing undesired consequenses. Please always consult with your health care professional prior to stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What should I watch for while taking this medicine?

Let your doctor or health care professional know if there is no improvement to your symptoms.

Do not treat diarrhea with over the counter products. Get in touch with your doctor if you have diarrhea lasting for more than 2 days or if it is severe and watery.

Do not take this medicine just before going to bed. It may not dissolve properly when you lay down and can cause pain in your throat. You should drink plenty of fluids while taking this medicine in order to help to reduce throat irritation.

This drug can make you more sensitive to the sun, that is why you should keep out of it during the treatment course. If sun can’t be avoided, at least wear protective clothes and always use a sunscreen.You shouldn’t use sun lamps or tanning beds/booths during the treatment course.

Your birth control pills may become ineffective during the treatment course with this medicine. Consult with your doctor regarding the use of an extra contraception method during this course.

If you are being treated for a sexually transmitted infection, avoid sexual contact until you have finished your treatment. Your sexual partner may also need treatment.

Avoid antacids, aluminum, calcium, magnesium, and iron products for 4 hours before and 2 hours after taking a dose of this medicine.

If you are using this medicine to prevent malaria, you should still protect yourself from contact with mosquitos. Stay in screened-in areas, use mosquito nets, keep your body covered, and use an insect repellent.

Does this medicine have any possible side effects?

The following side effects should be reported to your doctor or health care professional as soon as they are noticed:

  • allergic reactions like skin rashes, itching or hives,face, lips, or tongue swelling
  • difficulty breathing
  • fever
  • itching in the rectal or genital area
  • pain on swallowing
  • redness, blistering, skin peeling or loosening, including inside the mouth
  • severe stomach pain or cramps
  • unusual bleeding or bruising
  • unusual weakness or feeling tired
  • yellowing of the eyes or skin

The side effects listed below usually do not necessarily require any medical attention (please do report them to your physician if they are recurrent or bothersome):

  • diarrhea
  • loss of appetite
  • nausea, vomiting

Where should I store it?

Keep this medicine out of the children’s reach.

Store it at the room temperature, below 30 degrees C (86 degrees F). Protect it from the light. Keep container tightly closed. Dispose of any unused medicine after the expiry date is reached. Taking this medicine after the expiration date can make you seriously sick.
