What is it used for?

OFLOXACIN is a quinolone antibiotic. It can kill bacteria or stop their growth. It is used for the treatment of bacterial infections of the lungs, skin and pelvis. It will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections.

What should my health care professional know before I use this medicine?

Please do tell your physician if you have any of the following conditions:

  • arteriosclerosis
  • kidney disease
  • liver disease
  • seizures
  • other chronic conditions
  • an unusual or allergic reaction to ofloxacin, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • breast-feeding

How is this medicine should be taken?

Take it orally accompanied with a glass of water either with or without food. This medicine should be taken at the regular intervals. You should never take this medicine more often than prescribed. Take all of your medicine as directed even if you think your are better. Doses should never be skipped; neither should you stop the treatment course prematurely.

Contact your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine by children. Special care might be necessary.

Overdosage: If you suspect an overdosage, get in touch with the nearest poison control center or emergency room immediately.

NOTE: This medicine is only intended for your use. You should never share it with the others.

What to do if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose. Do not use double or extra doses.

What are the possible interactions with the other medicine/food/etc?

Do not take this medicine with any of the following:

  • cisapride
  • droperidol
  • some medicines for irregular heart rhythm

This medicine may also interact with the following:

  • antacids
  • cimetidine
  • cyclosporin
  • didanosine
  • medicines for diabetes
  • medicines for pain and swelling like ibuprofen, naproxen
  • multivitamins with minerals
  • probenecid
  • sucralfate
  • theophylline
  • warfarin

This list is not all-inclusive and may not describe all possible interactions. Give your health care provider a list of all the medicines, herbs, non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements you are using. Also tell them if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs. Some of those items may also interact with your medicine.

What should I watch for while taking this medicine?

Tell your doctor or health care professional if your symptoms do not improve or even get worse. Make sure you stay well hydrated while taking this medicine. Drink several glasses of liquids a day.

If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar carefully. If your blood sugar reading is unusual, stop taking this medicine and call your doctor for advice.

You may experience drowsiness or dizziness symptoms. You shouldn’t drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how exactly this medicine affects you. Do not stand up or sit up quickly, especially if you are a senior patient. This is to reduce the risk of possible dizziness or fainting spells.

This drug can make you more sensitive to the sun, that is why you should keep out of it during the treatment course. If sun can’t be avoided, at least wear protective clothes and always use a sunscreen.You shouldn’t use sun lamps or tanning beds/booths during the treatment course.

Do not treat diarrhea with over-the-counter products. Get in touch with your doctor if you have diarrhea that lasts for more than 2 days or if it is severe and watery.

Avoid taking didanosine, sucralfate, antacids, or iron or zinc products within 2 hours after taking this medicine.

Does this medicine have any possible side effects?

The following side effects should be reported to your doctor or health care professional as soon as they are noticed:

  • allergic reactions like skin rash or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
  • issues with breathing
  • chest pains
  • confusion, nightmares or hallucinations
  • fever, chills
  • irregular heartbeat or feeling faint
  • joint, muscle or tendon pain or swelling
  • redness, blistering, skin peeling or loosening, including inside the mouth
  • seizures
  • tremor
  • unusual pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness
  • yellowing of eyes or skin

The side effects listed below usually do not necessarily require any medical attention (please do report them to your physician if they are recurrent or bothersome):

  • diarrhea
  • difficulty sleeping
  • headache
  • nausea, vomiting
  • stomach upset, gas
  • unusual taste
  • vaginal irritation

Other side effects are also possible, the above list is not all inclusive.

Where should I store it?

Keep this medicine out of the children’s reach.

Store it at the room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 85 degrees F). Keep container tightly closed. Dispose of any unused medicine after the expiry date is reached.
