Isosorbide Dinitrate Sublingual tablet

What is it used for?

ISOSORBIDE DINITRATE is a type of vasodilator. It relaxes blood vessels, increasing the blood and oxygen supply to your heart. This medicine is used to prevent chest pains caused by angina. It will not help to stop an episode of chest pains.

What should I discuss with my physician prior to taking this medicine?

Please do tell your physician if you have any of the following conditions:

  • previous heart attack or heart failure
  • an unusual or allergic reaction to isosorbide dinitrate, nitrates, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • breast-feeding

How is this medicine should be taken?

Put this medicine under your tongue. You should never cut, crush or chew this medicine. Take this medicine 15 minutes before an activity that may cause chest pains or as directed. You should never take this medicine more often than prescribed.

Contact your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine by children. Special care might be necessary.

Overdosage: If you suspect an overdosage, get in touch with the nearest poison control center or emergency room immediately.

NOTE: This medicine is only intended for your use. You should never share it with the others.

What to do if I missed a dose?

If you missed a dose, it should be taken as soon as possible. If the time has almost come for the next dose, only that one should be taken. You should never take double or extra doses; a single doze is sufficient for the purposes.

What are the possible interactions with the other medicine/food/etc?

Do not take this medicine with the following:

  • medicines used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) like sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil

It may also trigger possible interactions with the following:

  • medicines for high blood pressure
  • other medicines for angina or heart failure

This list is not all-inclusive. Provide your health care provider with a list of all the medicines, herbs, non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements that you use. Also tell them whether you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs. Some of those items may also interact with your medicine.

Is there anything I should pay attention to while taking it?

You should check your heart rate and blood pressure regularly during the treatment course with this medicine. Ask your doctor or health care professional what your heart rate and blood pressure should be and when you should contact them. Tell your doctor or health care professional if you feel your medicine is no longer working.

You may get dizzy. You shouldn’t drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how exactly this medicine affects you. To reduce the risk of dizzy or fainting spells, do not sit or stand up quickly, especially if you are an older patient. Alcohol can make you more dizzy, and increase flushing and rapid heartbeats. Refrain from using alcohol at all costs.

Do not treat yourself for coughs, colds, or pain while you are taking this medicine without asking your doctor or health care professional for advice. Some ingredients may increase your blood pressure.

Does this medicine have any possible side effects?

The following side effects should be reported to your doctor or health care professional as soon as they are noticed:

  • bluish discoloration of lips, fingernails, or palms of hands
  • irregular heartbeat, palpitations
  • low blood pressure
  • nausea, vomiting
  • persistent headache
  • unusual weakness or feeling tired

The below side effects usually do not necessarily require any medical attention (please do report them to your physician if they are recurrent or bothersome):

  • flushing of the face or neck
  • rash

Other side effects are also possible, the above list is not all inclusive.

Where should I keep my medicine?

Keep this medicine out of the children’s reach.

Store it at the room temperature, approximately 25 degrees C (77 degrees F). Protect it from the light. Keep container tightly closed. Dispose of any unused medicine after the expiry date is reached.
