What is it used for?

FUROSEMIDE is a diuretic. It helps you to produce more urine, while also losing salt and excess water from your body. Furosemide is used for the treatment of high blood pressure, and edema or swelling from heart, kidney or liver disease.

What should I discuss with my physician prior to taking this medicine?

Please do tell your physician if you have any of the following conditions:

  • abnormal blood electrolytes
  • diarrhea or vomiting
  • gout
  • heart disease
  • kidney disease, small amounts of urine, or difficulty passing urine
  • liver disease
  • an unusual or allergic reaction to furosemide, sulfa drugs, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine?

This medicine should be taken orally with a glass of water. You may take this it with or without food. In case it is upsetting your stomach, take it with the food or milk next time. Please never take this medicine more often than it is prescribed. Always remember that you will have to pass more urine when taking this medicine. Do not take it at a time of day when it might cause you problems. It also shouldn’t be taken at bedtime.

Consult with your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine by children. While it may still may be prescribed for certain conditions, precautions should be applied.

Overdosage: If you suspect an overdosage, contact the nearest poison control center or emergency room immediately.

NOTE: This medicine is only intended for your use. Never share it with the others.

What if I miss a dose?

If you missed a dose, it should be taken as soon as possible. If it close to the time for your next dose, take only the next dose. Never take double or extra doses.

What are the possible interactions with the other medicine?

  • certain antibiotics given by injection
  • diuretics
  • heart medicines like digoxin, dofetilide, or nitroglycerin
  • lithium
  • medicines for diabetes
  • medicines for high blood pressure
  • medicines for high cholesterol like cholestyramine, clofibrate, or colestipol
  • medicines that relax muscles for surgery
  • NSAIDs, medicines for pain and inflammation like ibuprofen, naproxen, or indomethacin
  • phenytoin
  • steroid medicines like prednisone or cortisone
  • sucralfate

This list isn’t all-inclusive. Give physician a list of all the medicines, herbs, non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements that you are using. Also let them know if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs. Some of those items may interact with this medicine.

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

Pay regular visits to your doctor or health care professional for check-ups on your progress. Also check your blood pressure regularly, just in case. Inquire with your physician of what your blood pressure should be, and contact them if you notice any deviations from your norm. If you are suffering from diabetes, check your blood sugar as instructed.

You may need to hold on to the special diet while taking this medicine. Consult your doctor for details. Also ask how many glasses of fluid you should be drinking in a day. You should avoid getting dehydrated at all costs.

It is possible that you get drowsy or dizzy when taking this medicine. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you have learned this drug’s effect on you. Do not stand up or sit down quickly, especially if you are a senior patient. By doing so, you should be able to reduce the risk of dizziness or fainting spells. Alcohol can also make you even more drowsy and dizzy. Avoid alcoholic drinks during the treatment course.

This medicine is also capable of making you more sensitive to the sun. Keep out of the direct sunlight. If you cannot avoid it, at least wear protective clothing and always use sunscreen. You shouldn’t use sun lamps or tanning beds/booths during the treatment course.

Does this medicine have any possible side effects?

Side effects that should be reported to your doctor as soon as possible:

  • blood in urine or stools
  • dry mouth
  • fever or chills
  • hearing loss or ringing in the ears
  • irregular heartbeat
  • muscle pain or weakness, cramps
  • skin rash
  • stomach upset, pain, or nausea
  • tingling or numbness in the hands or feet
  • unusually weak or tired
  • vomiting or diarrhea
  • yellowing of the eyes or skin

Side effects that normally do not require medical attention (yet they should be reported if they continue or are bothersome):

  • headache
  • loss of an appetite
  • unusual bleeding or bruising

Other side effects are also possible, the above list is not all inclusive.

Where should I keep my medicine?

Keep it out of the children’s reach.

Store at the room temperature of between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Protect from direct light beams. Dispose of any unused medicine after the expiry date is reached.
