What is it used for?

CIPROFLOXACIN is a quinolone antibiotic. It is used to kill bacterias or hamper their growth. Ciprofloxacin can be used for treating different kinds of infections, like urinary, respiratory, skin, gastrointestinal, and bone infections. It will not be effective against colds, flu, or other viral infections.

What should my health care professional know before I take this medicine?

Please do tell your physician if you have any of the following conditions:

  • child with joint problems
  • heart condition
  • kidney disease
  • liver disease
  • seizures disorder
  • an unusual or allergic reaction to ciprofloxacin, other antibiotics or medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • breast-feeding

How is this medicine should be taken?

This medicine should be taken orally with a glass of water. Take it at the regular intervals. Please  never take it more often than prescribed. Take all of your medicine as prescribed even if you think you have already gotten better. Under no circumstances you can skip doses or stop the treatment course early.

You can take ciprofloxacin with food or without it. It can also be taken with a meal that contains dairy or calcium, yet please never not take with a dairy product alone, like milk or yogurt or calcium-fortified juice.

Refer to your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine for children. Special care may be necessary.

Overdosage: If you suspect an overdosage, contact the nearest poison control center or emergency room immediately.

NOTE: This medicine is only intended for your use. Never share it with the others.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, you should take it as soon as possible. If the time has almost come for your next dose, take only that one. You should never take double or extra doses.

What are the possible interactions with the other medicine?

Please never take this medicine with any of the following:

  • cisapride
  • droperidol
  • terfenadine
  • tizanidine

This medicine might also cause interactaction with the following:

  • antacids
  • caffeine
  • cyclosporin
  • didanosine (ddI) buffered tablets or powder
  • medicines for diabetes
  • medicines for inflammation like ibuprofen, naproxen
  • methotrexate
  • multivitamins
  • omeprazole
  • phenytoin
  • probenecid
  • sucralfate
  • theophylline
  • warfarin

This list is not all-inclusive. Give your physician a list of all the medicines, herbs, non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements you use. Also do let them know if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs. Some of those may interact with your treatment course.

Is there anything I should pay attention to while taking it?

Let your doctor or health care professional if there is no visible improvement of your symptoms.

You shouldn’t treat diarrhea with over the counter medicine. Contact your doctor if you are suffeting from diarrhea which lasts for more than 2 days or if it is severe and watery.

You may get drowsy or dizzy. You shouldn’t drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how exactly this medicine affects you. Do not stand up or sit down quickly, especially if you are a senior patient. This reduces the risk of dizziness or fainting spells.

This medicine might make you more sensitive to the sunlight. Try to keep out of it. If you cannot avoid the sunlight, wear protective clothes and use sunscreen. You shouldn’t use sun lamps or tanning beds/booths during the treatment course.

Avoid antacids, aluminum, calcium, iron, magnesium, and zinc products for 6 hours prior to and 2 hours following a dose of this medicine.

Does this medicine have any possible side effects?

Side effects that should be reported to your physician ASAP:

  • allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
  • breathing problems
  • confusion, nightmares or hallucinations
  • feeling faint or lightheaded, falls
  • irregular heartbeat
  • joint, muscle or tendon pain or swelling
  • pain or trouble passing urine
  • redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth
  • seizure
  • unusual pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

  • diarrhea
  • nausea or stomach upset
  • white patches or sores in the mouth

Other side effects are also possible, the above list is not all inclusive.

Where should I store it?

Keep it out of children’s reach.

This medicine should be stored at the room temperature below 30 degrees C (86 degrees F). Keep the container closed tightly. Dispose of any unused medicine after the expiry date is reached.
