What is it used for?

CLOMIPHENE is a fertility drug which is used to increase the chances of the pregnancy. It helps women ovulate (produce a mature egg) properly during their monthly cycle. As opposed to the other similar treatments, clomiphene alone does not have any significant effect on your chances of having multiple babies. It may only occur for roughly 5 out of every 100 women who are undergoing this treatment course. Clomiphene would be occasionally prescribed to men with low sperm counts, which are causing fertility problems.

What should my health care professional know before I take this medicine?

Please do tell your physician if you have any of the following conditions:

  • adrenal gland disease
  • blood vessel disease or blood clots
  • cyst on the ovary
  • endometriosis
  • liver disease
  • ovarian cancer
  • pituitary gland disease
  • vaginal bleeding that has not been evaluated
  • an unusual or allergic reaction to clomiphene, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • pregnant (should not be used if you are already pregnant)
  • breast-feeding

How is this medicine to be taken?

This medicine should be taken orally with a glass of water. You should take it exactly as directed for the exact number of days as prescribed by your physician. Doses should be taken at the regular intervals. For most women, it is necessary to take this medicine during 5 days, but the treatment length might be adjusted. Your doctor will be able to advise you on a start date for this medication and provide with the proper usage instructions. You should never take clomiphene more often than prescribed.

Consult with your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine by children. Special care may be necessary.

Overdosage: If you suspect an overdosage, contact the nearest poison control center or emergency room immediately.

NOTE: This medicine is only intended for your use. Never share it with the others.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, it should be taken as soon as possible. If it is close to the time for the following dose, take only that one. You should never take take double or extra doses.

What are the possible interactions with the other medicine?

  • herbal or dietary supplements, like blue cohosh, black cohosh, chasteberry, or DHEA
  • prasterone

Tell your physician about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, and all sorts of herbal products. Also let them know if you are a frequent user of caffeinated or alcoholic drinks, if you smoke, or use illegal drugs. All of those may affect the way your treatment works. You should always consult with your health care professional prior to giving up on or taking up any of your medicines.

Is there anything I should pay attention to while taking it?

You should definitely make sure that you understand how and when this medicine to be used. You should know when your ovulation is, thus figuring out when exactly to have sexual intercourse. This is to maximize the chance of getting pregnant.

Pay regular visits to your doctor to check on your progress. You may also need hormone level tests or you might need to use home-urine tests in order to check for ovulation. Try to keep all appointments as requested.

As opposed to other fertility treatments, this medicine does have any significant effect on your chances of having multiple babies. A slight increase of a chance to bring up twins may only occur for roughly 5 out of every 100 women undergoing the treatment course.

You should refrain from taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you suspect pregnancy.

This medicine is not intended for long-term usage. Most women who benefited from it did so within the first three monthly cycles. Your doctor will take care of monitoring your condition. This medicine is normally used for up to 6 total treatment cycles.

You may get drowsy or dizzy during the treatment course. You shouldn’t drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires mental alertness until you are certain about how this drug affects you. Neither should you stand up or sit down quickly. This is to reduce the risk of dizziness or fainting spells.

Drinking alcohol or smoking tobacco might decrease your chances of getting pregnant. It is advisory that you limit or stop alcohol and tobacco use during the fertility treatment course.

Does this medicine have any possible side effects?

Side effects that should be reported to your doctor or health care professional immediately:

  • allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
  • breathing problems
  • changes in vision
  • fluid retention
  • nausea, vomiting
  • pelvic pain or bloating
  • severe abdominal pain
  • sudden weight gain

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

  • breast discomfort
  • hot flashes
  • mild pelvic discomfort
  • mild nausea

Other side effects are also possible, the above list is not all inclusive.

Where should I store it?

Keep it out of the children’s reach.

This medicine should be stored at the room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Please make sure it is protected from heat, light, and moisture. Dispose of any unused medicine after the expiry date is reached.
