What is it used for?

AZITHROMYCIN is a macrolide antibiotic which prevents the growth of the bacterial cells. It is widely used for bacterial infection treatment in many different body parts. It can also be used for treatment of sexually transmitted vaginal or urinary tract infections triggered by chlamydia. This antibiotic doesn’t work for colds, flu, or any other virus infections.

What should my health care professional know before I take this medicine?

Please do tell your physician if you have any of the following conditions:

  • kidney disease; liver disease
  • pneumonia
  • stomach problems (especially colitis)
  • other chronic illness; an unusual or allergic reaction to azithromycin
  • other macrolide antibiotics (such as erythromycin), foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • breast-feeding

How is this medicine should taken?

Put azithromycin in the mouth, swallowing whole tablets with a full glass of water. Azithromycin can be taken with or without food. Take your doses regularly, as prescribed. Please never take take it more often than prescribed. Finish the full course prescribed by your physician even if you think your condition is better. Do not stop using it except when on your prescriber's advice.

Consult with your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine by children. Special care may be necessary.

Overdosage: If you suspect an overdosage, contact the nearest poison control center or emergency room immediately.

NOTE: This medicine is only intended for your use. Never share it with the others.

What if I miss a dose?

If you missed a dose, take it as soon as you possibly can. If the time has come for your next dose, take only the next dose. Never take double or extra doses. Please allow for a break of at least 12 hours between doses.

What are the possible interactions with the other medicine?

  • antacids
  • astemizole; digoxin
  • dihydroergotamine
  • ergotamine
  • magnesium salts
  • terfenadine
  • triazolam
  • warfarin

Tell your physician about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell them if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These are capable of affecting the way your medicine works. Please always consult with your health care professional prior to stopping or starting any of your medicines.

Does this medicine have any possible side effects?

The following side effects should be reported to your doctor or health care professional as soon as they are noticed:

  • dark yellow or brown urine;
  • difficulty breathing; severe or watery diarrhea;
  • skin rash, itching;
  • irregular heartbeat, palpitations, or chest pain;
  • vomiting;
  • yellowing of the eyes or skin

The below side effects usually do not necessary require any medical attention (please do report them to your physician if they are recurrent or bothersome)::

  • diarrhea;
  • dizziness, drowsiness;
  • hearing loss;
  • headache;
  • increased sensitivity to the sun;
  • nausea;
  • stomach pain or cramps;
  • tiredness;
  • vaginal irritation, itching or discharge

Other side effects are also possible, the above list is not all inclusive..

Is there anything I should pay attention to while taking it?

Inform your prescriber if your symptoms do not improve in 2 to 3 days. Contact your physician as soon as you can if you get an allergic reaction to azithromycin, such as rash, itching, difficulty swallowing, or swelling of the face, lips or tongue.

While using the medicine, keep out of the sun, or use the protective clothing outdoors; it is also advisory to use a sunscreen. Please do not use sun lamps or sun tanning beds or booths during the treatment course.

If you get any form of diarrhea, please refrain from self-treatment. Refer to your prescriber for advice instead.

Antacids may prevent azithromycin from working properly. If you have an upset stomach and want to take an antacid, please ensure that there is an interval of at least 2 hours since the last  azithromycin doze, or at least 4 hours before the next dose.

If you are planning to have a surgery, inform your physician that you are taking azithromycin.

Where should I store it?

Azithromycin should be kept out of children’s reach in a container that cannot be opened by small children.

Store this medicine at the room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Dispose of any unused medicine after the expiry date is reached.
